What is an electronic signature?
An electronic signature, or e-signature, is a legally recognized way of signing a document digitally. It captures a signer’s intent to agree to the contents, without the print-sign-scan cycle that paper signatures require.

An electronic signature is not just a picture of a handwritten signature pasted into a file. It is a process that records that a particular person agreed to a particular document at a particular time, in a way that can be relied on. Depending on the method, it may capture the signer’s identity, the moment of signing, and a record that ties the signature to the specific version of the document, so it is clear exactly what was agreed.
In most jurisdictions, electronic signatures carry the same legal weight as handwritten ones for the great majority of documents, which is why they have become the default for agreements, contracts, and forms.
